My Symptoms are Worsening…Can I Get a Fibromyalgia Test?

A woman in pain

If you are someone who is suffering from the symptoms of fibromyalgia, you are probably pretty tired of being told that “it’s all in your head”, “just get more exercise”, or even “maybe you’re just depressed.”

In fact, out of the four million people in the United States who are currently suffering from fibromyalgia symptoms, most of them have had to spend countless hours visiting doctors, therapists, nutritionists, and the internet to try and get someone to affirm for them that what they have is a legitimate medical condition.

The runaround is a real problem.

And – it can make your symptoms worse.

But the question is…what can you do about it?

Physical examination

Can’t someone give you a blood test or some other sort of lab tests that will validate your symptoms and finally give you the correct diagnosis for the disease of fibromyalgia?

Can’t Someone Test Me for Fibromyalgia?

Unfortunately, there is currently no blood test to diagnose fibromyalgia in a patient, regardless of their symptom severity.

Though there has been some talk in the medical community about testing for fibromyalgia by using thyroid hormone tests, other diagnostic tests, and even a symptom severity scale, none of this has yet happened.

Without testing, fibromyalgia patients will continue to wait for the relief from the fatigue and widespread pain are having while battling this disease.

If you are experiencing fibromyalgia symptoms, you are probably still waiting for a fibromyalgia diagnosis.

More Research Needs to Be Done on Fibromyalgia

So much more research needs to be done on this disease, and so much more attention needs to be called to it.

Many healthcare providers who specialize in treating diseases like fibromyalgia have had some success with a process called differential diagnosis.

With a differential diagnosis, your doctor or healthcare provider will try to determine how your fibromyalgia symptoms are similar symptoms to other conditions.

Physical examination

By doing this, your doctor is able to rule out that your fibromyalgia is not actually rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, or another sort of autoimmune disease. These diseases may present with similar symptoms like fibromyalgia, and some question is fibromyalgia an autoimmune disease itself.

Once these can be ruled out, it becomes more apparent that your symptom severity really does point toward a fibromyalgia diagnosis.

A Physical Exam Can Also Help

Another way your healthcare provider can try diagnosing fibromyalgia is through a physical exam.

Patients who are experiencing fibromyalgia will often complain of widespread pain and multiple areas on their body that is highly sensitive to pressure and touch.

During the physical exam, doctors can run what is referred to as a widespread pain index.

There are over a dozen points on a fibromyalgia person’s body that will be painful to touch. By performing a widespread pain index exam, the healthcare provider can have the patient provide them with a widespread pain index score, based on the generalized pain and tender points in each area of touch.

Having multiple tender points is not the only sign of fibromyalgia. But determining where those tender points are, and how severe the pain is may go far in helping the person find the relief they need.

Though a physical exam and a symptom severity scale may lead to a fibromyalgia diagnosis, nor are they blood tests that could accurately diagnose the disease, they may at least serve as a potentially useful tool in helping you find some relief for your chronic pain and discomfort.

A widespread pain index score can make a difference in a fibromyalgia diagnosis.

Being able to rank their generalized pain gives a patient an idea of how severe their pain actually is, and helps a healthcare professional to rule out other possibilities before they diagnose fibromyalgia as the main cause of discomfort.

But until that happens, those who are suffering from the symptoms are going to have to be patient and find ways of alleviating their symptoms on their own.

There is Also No Cure for Fibromyalgia

Not only are there no lab tests available for the painful disease of fibromyalgia, but there is also no known cure.

As with finding a better way to diagnose the disease, there needs to be a stronger emphasis on finding a cure for it as well.

In recent years, there has been some hope.

As researchers continue to explore a cure for fibromyalgia through clinical trial experiments, different diagnostic tests, and various other criteria, there seems to be more of an emphasis on finding a cure.

As more Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year, more patients and healthcare providers are asking for more funding to go toward finding a cure.

But Until There is a Cure, There Is Some Relief

One of the biggest challenges when it comes to fibromyalgia is the vast and varied symptoms that can accompany it – symptoms that can vary from person to person as well as vary in severity, frequency, and consistency.

For example, most people who would benefit from a fibromyalgia test are experiencing widespread pain, muscle aches, poor sleep, and memory difficulties.

Though not everyone has these same symptoms, and not everyone has the same symptom severity, most patients who approach their doctors or other healthcare providers with the question of whether they can be tested for fibromyalgia have some, if not all, of these symptoms.

Fibromyalgia Can Be a Lonely Place to Live…Until You Find the Support You Need

Let’s face it…living with fibromyalgia symptoms can not only be physically and emotionally exhausting, but it can also be incredibly lonely as well.

Trying to find the support from healthcare providers can be a challenge in itself. But sometimes even your family may not understand.

Your loved ones love you, of course. But do they truly understand what it’s like to live with widespread pain, constant fatigue, and feeling depressed day after day?

Probably not.

A happy person

But Native Formulas understands.

We were founded by individuals who have either battled fibromyalgia or have cared for those who do. We understand the misconceptions and misunderstandings surrounding this oftentimes debilitating disease and how much suffering it can cause a person to have to endure.

But even without a proper fibromyalgia diagnosis or proper testing, you don’t have to continue to suffer with your fibromyalgia symptoms.

There may not be a cure, but there is some relief

If There Isn’t a Fibromyalgia Test, Then What Can I Do?

We at Native Formulas are big believers in three main concepts when it comes to treating your fibromyalgia symptoms and caring for your body.

Think about each of these as you move forward in trying to find the relief you deserve.

The Body is Designed to Health Itself.

Our bodies are amazingly well-designed and – if given the proper nutrients, care and time – are capable of doing things for themselves that are way beyond what even the most sophisticated levels of medical intervention can.

Most Diseases Will Begin in Your Gut

Think about this one. When we are experiencing pain, oftentimes it will begin at least with some ailment within our core. From irritable bowel syndrome to other diseases, our guts take a beating when it comes to health.

And not only that…our guts are created to move all nutrients and waste through our body, parcel out what is necessary, and get rid of the rest. That’s a lot to ask of one body system! Why don’t we take better care of it?

When our guts aren’t working correctly, there’s a very good chance that nothing else is going to. They need us to focus more attention on keeping them healthy.

And if you are experiencing symptoms of fibromyalgia? Then your gut needs extra TLC.

Let us here at Native Formulas help show you how to give it.

Diet Has Everything to Do With Your Health

Finally, for anyone wrestling with any sort of chronic health issue, there is nothing more important than focusing on your diet.

One of the biggest downsides to fibromyalgia is the feeling that no one gets it, no one understands it, and no one is doing anything to help.

Table filled with vegetables and fruits

This is where you can be your biggest advocate.

Learning what types of foods make your fibromyalgia symptoms worse, and what types of supplements make it better is going to go a long way in your ability to sustain as normal of a lifestyle as possible.

At Native Formulas, we have a variety of products that may not be able to cure fibromyalgia, but they can certainly help provide you with some of the relief you are craving.

Focusing on your diet and what products go into your body is going to go a long way in helping you have the health transformation you are looking for.
